Wanted: A Matrix Rip Off

By | October 31, 2007

Since Neo and friends first hit the big screens in 1999, several movies have tried to copy The Matrix in some shape or form (Underworld, Constantine, Equilibrium, The Island). Now there’s another one to add to the list, "Wanted".

Wanted, which stars James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland, The Chronicles of Narnia, Band of Brothers) as Neo Wesley, Morgan Freeman as Morpheus Sloan, and Angelina Jolie as Trinity is based on Mike Millar’s 2005 graphic novel that is based on the same name.

The story is about Wesley who finds out that his father was one of the greatest assassins to ever live, is taken in by the "Fraternity" and trained by Sloan (Freeman) to follow in his father’s footsteps.

If you closed your eyes and listened to the following quote, you would almost think that it’s Laurence Fishburne saying it to Keanu, but instead it’s Freeman telling McAvoy:

If no one ever told you that bullets fly straight, what would you do? It is a choice, Wesley, that each of us must face: to remain ordinary, pathetic, beat down, coasting through a miserable existence, like sheep herded by fate; or you can take control of your own destiny and join us, releasing the caged wolf you have inside. Our purpose is to maintain stability in an unstable world. Kill one, save a thousand. Within the fabric of this world, every life hangs by a thread. We are that thread. A fraternity of assassins, with the weapons of fate. This is the decision that lies before you now, the sheep, or the wolf? The choice is your’s.

The similarities to The Matrix don’t end there. I’m sure that if you had your eyes opened while listening, you would have been able to pick out a few more, and that’s all in a 2:33 minute trailer.

Wanted is scheduled for theatres on March 28th, 2008.
